With the demand for contingent workers on the rise and the current Australian workforce shortage, there has never been a better time to try contracting. Here are 5 key reasons why becoming a contractor can benefit you and your career:

Find work quickly

Securing a permanent role can be a lengthy process, and by taking on a contract assignment, you can often bypass this and get into work sooner. Many employers looking to hire contractors are in a hurry, often leading to flexibility in the hiring requirements and providing a greater opportunity to get your foot in the door of a new industry or company.

Have more variety and tackle specialist projectsPhoto of consultant recruiting in Supply Chain and Technical spaces within FMCG and retail industries

Contracting is a fantastic way to try different industries and roles without committing. It is also a great way to gain exposure to different management styles and companies. Many contract opportunities are project-based and offer an excellent opportunity to gain invaluable experience and add new accomplishments to your CV. And if you find yourself loving the role, many contract roles have the potential to transition into a permanent position.

Get paid for every hour you put in

There’s a high demand for contractors because of their specialist and well-developed skills. Contractors are often paid significantly more than permanent employees in similar roles. In specific sectors, contractors can earn up to twice as much as their permanent counterparts, with the bonus of being paid overtime for every extra hour worked.

Expand your professional network

In the professional world, it’s all about who you know. Contracting provides an excellent opportunity to expand your professional network while gaining new skills and new referees. Contracting exposes you to a broader number of managers and colleagues who may be able to introduce you to other great contacts.

Work according to your own schedule

Many contractors enjoy the flexibility to take time off between assignments for holidays or personal projects without being restricted by company needs or time limits. Take on roles when you choose and enjoy a greater work-life balance.

Does becoming a contractor sound like something you would like to try?

Whilst contracting is not for everyone it does have some great benefits if you find yourself active in the market. As contracting processes move extremely quickly, I am constantly engaging with candidates for future opportunities.
